It is important to us that we don’t add to the amount of waste in our world, recyclable or not.
Living on St John, trash and recyclable materials all have to be shipped off the island. Therefore, we choose to wrap our bread in paper that can be added to compost. Sourdough bread needs to breathe, so we encourage you not to put your bread in plastic. Rather, leave the bread cut side down on a cutting board or the paper it came in. All bread should be eaten or frozen within 3 days; otherwise, in our extremely humid climate, you are likely to have stale bread. If in the event your bread goes stale, slice it up, toss it in olive oil and seasonings and you will have amazing croutons!
Unfortunately, we have not found another way to store the pizza crust other than plastic. We chose a plastic container that can be recycled on St. John or reused as tupperware.
